Wildlife Viewing

Songbird viewing is very good throughout the shrubby areas of this site, and small mammals such as squirrels, rabbits, and chipmunks are also common.

White-tailed deer are common at Pickerel Lake
and throughout Michigan. A deer can run
up to 35 miles per hour for short distances!

A large population of white-tailed deer lives around the lake and they are often seen, especially in winter. In the lake and wetland areas, look for raccoons, herons, and waterfowl. From the wetland boardwalk you can view an active beaver lodge. Beavers and muskrats are often seen swimming in the lake. Dawn and dusk are the best times to watch for them.
