Fisheries

<< Preamble >>

In order to develop a coordinated management program on the Great Lakes under the unit plan, the role and function of the Great Lakes Fisheries Stations must be clearly established.

<< General Policy >>

The Great Lakes Stations will, with guidance and assistance from staff and regions, have primary responsibility for execution and coordination of lake-wide programs.  The following areas of responsibility have been established:

Lake Superior.............................Marquette

Lake Michigan............................Charlevoix

Lake Huron.................................Alpena

Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair,

Detroit and St. Clair Rivers........Lake St. Clair Great Lakes Fisheries Station

Reasonable lines of communication and areas of responsibility relative to the regions and districts shall be worked out and described in procedures.

<< Specific Policies >>

1.         The Stations will have the primary responsibility of collecting data and providing reports on the fish populations; assessing the recreational and commercial fisheries, and providing management recommendations to regions and staff that are pertinent to propagation, protection, and utilization of the fisheries resources.

2.         The Stations will provide vessel support and personal assistance to the Fisheries Research Section involved in projects on the Great Lakes; will, in cooperation with other units, assist in monitoring environmental changes in the Great Lakes; and will provide assistance to Law Enforcement Division in enforcing fishing laws and regulations relating to recreational and commercial fisheries.

3.         The Stations will participate in the development of fishing techniques and gear to promote selective and efficient harvest of the fisheries resources of the Great Lakes.

4.         The Stations shall participate with staff and regions in the development of a continuous program of fisheries management of the Great Lakes.
