Commission Policy No. 2502 Dated:  January 1, 1977

<< Subject >>

TRIALS - FIELD DOG

<< Preamble >>

Trials and contests regarding the comparative performance of field hunting dogs is a sport and recreational activity enjoyed by a substantial number of persons.  Extensive areas preferably in productive wildlife regions are needed.  Use of captive wild birds and animals is common.  Act 286, Public Acts of 1929, specifies that permission must be obtained from the Department of Natural Resources to hold such trials.

<< General Policy >>

Permission for a field trial meet shall be obtained from the landowner before an application will be considered by the Department.  A permit shall be issued if an examination of the site indicates there will be no material damage to wildlife.  Live animals and birds may be used if legally possessed but shall not be dragged in a sack or led on a leash and birds may be shot but not by more than four gunners in a party.

The Department may establish field trial areas on State land if not in serious conflict with dedicated uses.  Such events on State land shall be subject to all policies, rules and regulations that apply to other organized events held on State lands.
