2104 - WOLF IMPORTATION INTO MICHIGAN
Issued January 1, 1977

<< Subject >>

WOLF IMPORTATION INTO MICHIGAN

<< Preparing Division >>

WILDLIFE

<< Preamble >>

The importation of wolves, though infrequently done, causes anxiety for the neighbors of those importing, and creates problems for the local police.  Possession of wolves is often merely a status symbol, and those desiring to do so frequently have little knowledge of wolf temperament, the danger they can present, and their requirements.  Act 52, Public Acts of 1937, prohibits importation or rearing of wolves except under permit.

<< General Policy >>

The Department shall limit permits to import wolves into the State to:

1.         Educational and research institutions.

2.         Individuals working under the authority of an educational or research institution.

3.         Governmental agencies.

4.         Zoological garden, theatrical exhibition or circus.

5.         Persons holding current exhibition permits.

Possession permits to keep wolves as "pets" shall not be issued.
