WILDLIFE - RABIES IN

<< Preamble >>

Rabies in domestic and wild animals must be controlled.

<< General Policy >>

The Department shall cooperate fully with the departments of Health and Agriculture, and local authorities in the control and prevention of rabies in domestic and wild animals.

<< Specific Policies >>

All reported outbreaks shall be investigated thoroughly and if it is determined that control and prevention work must be done, the following steps shall be taken:

I.          Local health authorities shall be contacted and efforts coordinated.

2.         All available State trappers and trapping instructors shall be moved into the affected area for the purpose of destroying as many coyotes and foxes as possible.

3.         Additional trappers shall be hired if necessary.

4.         If trapping fails to control the epizootic, the possibilities of a poisoning campaign shall be investigated.  Only wintertime poisoning should be considered, however.
